It comes amid growing calls for “Martha’s rule”, which would give patients and their families a legal right to a second opinion, after a campaign by Merope Mills who lost her daughter, Martha, in 2021 to sepsis following failings in her care, which included doctors not listening to Ms Mills’ concerns. More than a quarter of patients said they were not “always” included in conversations around their hospital care, while only a third said they were involved a “great deal” The regulator described a deterioration in communication between patients and NHS staff, including a fall in the number of patients who felt involved in their own care. It comes after a separate analysis of health service data revealed more than 120,000 people died while on waiting lists last year, double what it was five years earlier.ĭr Sean O’Kelly, chief inspector of healthcare at the CQC, said the NHS was “struggling with a large elective backlog” and the survey results reflect the impact of that. “Labour will restore the NHS to good health, so it is there for us when we need it once again.” “This is bad for their health and it increases the overall bill for their care to the taxpayer,” he added.
Wes Streeting, the shadow health secretary, said that “patients are being left for months or even years, and their conditions are worsening as a result”. There was also a jump in patients who said they had to wait “far too long” for a bed on a ward after being admitted tohospital, rising to 18 per cent, up from 15 per cent in 2021 and eight per cent in 2020. The report revealed a rise in frustration among patients as less were happy to wait than in previous years. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) said “people’s experiences of inpatient care have worsened since 2020” after it conducted a survey of more than 63,000 people during November 2022. The survey revealed growing frustration among the public at record waiting times, delays in treatment, and a lack of communication from staff.Īlmost a fifth of people said their health had “got much worse” while waiting for an appointment or procedure.
It comes as the NHS contends with a record backlog of 7.6 million people waiting for appointments and procedures. The biggest annual survey of hospital care found that 41 per cent of people felt their health had got worse while stuck on NHS waiting lists.
